“O Holy Night”
Traditional Christmas Carols
O’ Holy Night Is an all time classic and is alays played over the festive period. The song has been copied by just about every respected artist in the industry – from Mariah Carey to Frank Sinatra and Martina McBride, you can hear very different versions of the song, and still the power of the song is overwhelming.

“What Child Is This?”
Another classic, this carol has been covered by many artists, including Johnny Mathis, Sarah McLachlin, Josh Groban and Jessica Simpson. The song was written in 1865 by William Chatterton Dix while he was on bed rest, recovering from a serious illness.

“Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”
A very very well known carol and was first published in 1739 by Charles Wesley, and although he was more than happy for people to use his song, he was very strict about the lyrics. The lyrics, under no circumstances were to be changed, and this was put into writing but his ‘friend’ George Whitfield ignored his request and later changed the words from “Hark! How all the Welkin Rings/ Glory to the King Of Kings.”

“The First Noel”
The First Noel is known across the world and is renowned for being one of the most festive carols out right now. The song has been traced back to as early as the 13th Century and is thought to be French considering the spelling of ‘Noel’. Again this song has been covered by many artists, including Kenny Rogers and Vanessa Williams.

“Angels We Have Heard On High”
This is one of the most Traditional Christmas Carol’s and was initially a French Carol. “Les Anges Dans Nos Campagnes” Which, literally translates to “The Angels In Our Countryside”. It was translated from French to English by James Chadwick in 1862. Artists such as Bing Crosbie and Olivia Newton John have covered the Traditional Christmas Carol.

“Silent Night”
Silent Night is known by everyone that celebrates Christmas. The traditional Christmas carol has been translated into over 300 languages and dialects. The song was originally written in German by an Austrian Priest named Josef Mohr in 1816 and it was not until 1863 that verses 1 and 3 were translated into English by a man named John F. Young, the translator of verses 2 and 4 remains unknown. When the troops were fighting in WW1 in 1914, the song was sung simultaneously in both English and German. Again, this song has been covered by some very famous people, such as Johnny Cash, Dean Martin, Sinead O’Connor and Josh Groban.

“Away In A Manger”
Away In A Manger is most commonly sang by children over Christmas time. The first publication that can be proved was in 1885 in a Lutheran Sunday School book by James R. Murray. The first two verses are the original song – the third verse was added to the carol ten years later by John T. Mcfarland. Many influential performers have released versions of this all time Traditional Christmas Carol, including Nat King Cole, Julie Andrews and Martina McBride.

“O’ Little Town Of Bethlehem”
This Traditional Christmas Carol was written in 1867 on Christmas Eve by a priest named Phillip Brooks. The Episcopal Priest said the carol came to him on Christmas Eve and it was first sang on Christmas Day. “O’ Little Town Of Bethlehem” is written about the true meaning of Christmas and is known the world all over. The song has been covered by some of the greats, such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Sarah Mclachlan.

“O Come All Ye Faithful”
This popular carol was written by John Francis Wade in 1743. The song was originally written in Latin and was later translated into hundreds of languages and dialects, and is known across the globe as one of the most festive Christmas Songs of all time. The traditional Christmas carol has been covered by many artists including John Groban, Nat King Cole, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash.

“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”
This Christmas Carol was published in Britain in 1833, but was actually sung for centuries prior to this. The story has it, that this was sang to the Gentry by town Watchmen who earned extra money during the Christmas period. This traditional Christmas carol has once again, been covered by many artists throughout the ages. From Julie Andrews, to Neil Diamond and Mariah Carey, each version varies.
